I grin at the man sitting next to me on the bench. I decided the best way to relax would probably be to watch the ocean for a while, and I instantly made a friend.

“Anyway, kid, don’t let anyone ever tell you you’re different because of some bullshit Mother Nature played on ya. Look at me—I’ve got all my digits and I’m normal as fuck, but I still don’t have a place to live or money in my pocket. At least you’re making something of yourself.”

I laugh as I do my best to clasp my hands behind my neck. Lucas has been nothing but full of wisdom since he came over to sit with me. Granted, he smells like beer and yesterday’s garbage, but he’s kind, which is something I’m not used to encountering outside of the Carnaval lights.

“You should come to the show tonight, man,” I tell him enthusiastically. “Give them my name at the ticket booth, I’ll put you on a good list.”

“Nah, kid, I don’t think—”

“Helios is my name, not kid. Seven o’clock tonight is when the curtains open. Show up before then, maybe half an hour or so? I’ll make sure you’re taken care of,” I continue, cutting him off.

I figure the least I can do for the hour of peace he’s given me is get some good food in his belly and give him somewhere warm to hang out for a while.

He looks at me with such genuine thanks in his eyes that I know if I don’t look away soon, mine will start to well up. “I might take you up on that, kid.”

I get to my feet and stretch my arms over my head, “I hope you do. I’ll take you backstage and you can meet everyone.”

He shakes his head fondly as he gets to his feet and looks me in the eyes. I raise an eyebrow, a curious smile on my lips and then inhale sharply when he extends a hand toward me.

“I used to have a son. A long time ago. I wasn’t the best father in the world to him.”

His timbre is low, sad even, and I clear my throat, then bite down on my lip. Taking a step toward him, I extend one of my own, careful not to press to tightly as we shake hands, then let go.

Lucas sits back down, a sigh escaping him before he turns his gaze up to me as I prepare to turn and walk away.

He gives me a parting wave with the brown paper bag he’s been gripping like a goddamn diamond and I return it with a grin before I start back toward the boardwalk.

I made a friend in a stranger but couldn’t make one out of the man who knew me, I think ruefully as I continue to walk.

Glancing up at the sky I realize that maybe it’s been longer than an hour. The sun looks like it’ll be heading down over the horizon soon and the skies will darken to burnt pink, then purple, then dark blue.
